UK Government to criminalise ‘virginity testing’, but what is it?
‘Virginity testing’ sometimes referred to as ‘two-finger testing’ is a harmful violation of women and girls, an invasion of privacy, and an erosion of their human rights. Women are still being sent by men to have their virginity checked in the United Kingdom. This week, the government has released its Tackling Violence against Women and Girls Strategy, after a Call for Evidence which received over 180,000 responses, earlier on in the year. The document outlines how the government intends to prioritise prevention, support survivors, pursue perpetrators and create a robust system.
