Accredited Training

An important aspect of dealing with domestic violence is raising the level of understanding of the dynamics involved in abusive relationships. With forty years extensive experience of working with women and children The Haven Wolverhampton is able to offer a range of training packages that address the issues surrounding domestic violence. These programmes are designed to provide individuals, groups and organisations with knowledge and understanding of the nature of domestic violence as well as the associated laws and policies. The objectives of The Haven Wolverhampton training programmes are to:

  • Raise awareness of issues around domestic violence and working with victims/survivors; promote a model of good working practice with service users and employees.
  • Enable groups and individuals to gain accreditation and recognition for their hard work and commitment to providing quality service.
  • Further enable women to improve their life chances through education, information and support.

In September 2011 The Haven Wolverhampton was awarded a prestigious training National Training Award for its “exemplary” Working with Survivors of Domestic Violence programme. From thousands of entries from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland just 36 organisations were chosen to receive awards. The Haven Wolverhampton became the Regional Winners of the National Training Award in the medium employer category.

Available Training

Working with Survivors of Domestic Violence

This is a Level 3 training programme, recognised by the Open College Network West Midlands Region (OCNWMR), which aims to give participants a greater understanding of the nature of domestic violence. The programme consists of a number of units and is designed so that individuals can claim credits for each unit completed, thus allowing for personal choice or professional necessity that may prohibit participation in the whole programme. Domestic Violence Policy in the Workplace

Domestic Violence is something employers need to consider when reviewing how to retain staff, maximise productivity and support the workforce. This programme aims to help raise awareness of domestic violence and support organisations to develop an effective domestic violence workplace policy. For more information please click here.

Multi Agency Training Days

The Haven Wolverhampton 'Domestic Violence Awareness' 1 day training takes place a number of times throughout the year and provides an opportunity for individuals from various different agencies to come together to engage in learning. The day challenges the abiding myths and stereotypical views which underpin beliefs about Domestic Violence and Abuse against women and children. Wider issues of diversity are explored. Learners can apply to achieve Level 3 Open College Network West Midlands (OCNWMR) accreditation for this programme for an additional cost. To book your place please complete the booking form.

Financial Abuse in the context of Domestic Violence/Abuse

Financial abuse is often not considered a form of Domestic Abuse – but it can in fact have a devastating effect on the victim, their family and future economic stability. The training was designed following a 3 year project funded by The Nationwide Foundation and aims to equip management and frontline staff with the knowledge and understanding of financial abuse in order to support women who feel ‘they cannot afford to leave.’ This session is aimed at professionals and agencies who work with individuals at risk or experiencing financial abuse within their relationship. The session includes demonstration of the Havens online Financial Capability toolkit. Upon completing this training session, attendees will:

  • Understand the term Financial Abuse and recognise the symptoms and its impact.
  • Be able to place Financial Abuse in the context of Domestic Violence and Abuse.
  • Explore the problems and barriers experienced by individuals.
  • Explore solutions towards best working practices.
  • Understand how The Haven Financial Capability Tool can be used to assess an individual’s financial situation.

Children and Young People Living with Domestic Violence: Impact of taking on the Carer Role

According to research conducted by YouGov on behalf of the charity 4Children, almost one million children in Britain are affected by domestic abuse, either as victims or witnesses. This session is aimed at individuals and professionals working with children and young people who may be looking after their mother or younger siblings as a result of Domestic Violence taking place within the home. The training originated through the 3 year Comic Relief funded project ‘Who Cares 4 Me?’ Upon completing this training session, attendees will:

  • Be able to identify a young-carer.
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of young carers.
  • Understand the impact of domestic violence and abuse on young carers.
  • Know how to support children and young people who are carers.
